How to Increase Awareness of Heart Disease in Women - It's not just a "Man's" Disease

Although many women are aware of the risk factors for heart disease, a recent survey found that nearly 40% still believe it is primarily a "man's disease." Additionally, over half of the surveyed women had never had a heart health check with their doctor. A survey conducted by Her Heart, supported by the Victorian Government, in 2019 revealed that the largest group of women experiencing heart problems were in the 45-54-year age group, and over 50% had a family history of heart disease.

Encouragingly, over 90% of survey participants believed that women could reduce their risk of heart disease by taking steps such as quitting smoking, managing blood pressure and weight, and lowering cholesterol. However, the survey also revealed a lack of awareness about the impact of stress on heart health, which was identified as a risk factor by a smaller percentage of respondents.

Most of the survey participants felt that there is not enough public awareness about women and heart disease, with the largest groups saying this being in the 18–24-year age group and those 75 years and over.
